Dog massage

Canine massage relaxes the muscles, reduces discomfort, improves joint flexibility and decreases pain. Also, it can reduce emotional problems due to anxiety, fear or stress. The hands-on massage techniques used are based on the dog’s needs. Massaging your dog I place gentle pressure on the coat, muscles and connective tissue to contribute towards a better balance of the body. It works by relaxing and stimulating the healing power of the body. All dogs can benefit from a Dog massage, not only dogs with physical problems but also those with behavioural problems.  dogNL works closely with veterinarians and animal physiotherapists. Therefore I can offer a Dog massage tailored to your dog’s needs and physical condition.

Benefits from Dog massage

Canine massage, Physical Benefits. Dogs who are getting older, have had surgery, or are active in dog sport can benefit from relaxation of their muscles. Massage will stimulate blood circulation which decreases muscle soreness. It also works on the lympatic system, cleaning the body of toxins. Recovery will improve and your dog will feel more comfortable.

Canine massage, Emotional Benefits. Especially dogs who are fearful or stressed, often have a lot of tension in the muscles too. Massage regulates and activates the nerve system and the hormone system, and thus influences your dog’s mood. Relaxing the body, will relax the head. Body and mind will be better balanced. A good basis when you would like to work on a behavioural issue with your dog.

Canine massage, Communication Benefit. When you massage your dog, a silent communication happens, soul to soul, if you’ll allow it. Because of this, massage can actually help in training. It aids enormously with interaction with your dog and mutual understanding. Also, hyperactive dogs often benefit from massage for relaxation.

Canine massage, Bonding Benefit. With massage, you give your dog your love! It increases the bond you already have. Especially for re-homed dogs, hands-on massage is a way to connect literally as well as mentally. In addition, your dog also learns to feel safe. He feels understood, valued and accepted. A good basis for a long relationship with your pet dog.

How does it work

The sessions generally take place on the floor, on a mat or dog bed. I will first observe how your dog moves and we will discuss any possible tension in the body. Your dog will get all the time he needs to feel comfortable and experience the benefit. I have the utmost respect for your dog. That means that any signal he gives means I will stop immediately. Only then he will fully trust me to continue. The massage sessions will last approx. 45 mins.

The owner in action. On request I learn you a few simple massage techniques to help your dog. Pet owners who use massage to soothe their dog, see them unwind and relax.

* Please note! Dog massage is not a substitute for regular veterinary care, nor is it a cure for disease or illness. If your animal companion has any symptoms of injury or disease, please consult with your veterinarian or animal physiotherapist before starting any massage program.

Useful

Video: A simple massage technique is the so-called ‘Harkengriff’. Every dog likes it and will relax whilst massaging him. Note: Stop the massage immediately as soon as you clearly feel a difference in temperature, feel a small lump, or when your dog noticably reacts. Further research is necessary before you can continue the massage.  (source: www.doggo.nl)
